On the original DrumBrute, you got a hi tom and low tom on different buttons and could set pitch on each.

However, I don't understand what the Hi/Lo Tom is doing on this thing.

The FM Drum is a really cool addition, and you can do everything from pitched notes to metallic sounds - it's one of the distinguishing characteristics of the DBI's sound. The snares and hats are totally acceptable to me. You can access all the information you need, but it could have been done more intuitively. As best I can tell, Arturia doesn't allow much to be automated by MIDI, and if it has a knob that does something analog on the device, you probably need to physically move the knob to change it.Īrturia has this habit of borrowing their LED touch pads to do everything, but I really wish they had gone with a separate indicator light for some features, such as whether the roller/looper is set, and which instruments have the color mode activated. Even the TR-08 (Boutique) forced you to go through a menu to access it, though you can automate it externally with MIDI. It also drive me nuts how many drum machines do not allow you to set the pitch of the bass drum, particularly if it's an 808-style long decay note. As with the rest of the DBI, it does sort of miss out on a tone control or filter, though you can send it as an isolated out and do that externally if you want. I've heard it described as both 808- and 909-like, but I hear more 808 in there, especially with the wide decay sweep that goes all the way from punchy to bass note swells. The randomization (per instrument) feature is a neat creation tool, as well. On occasion, even if I miss the timing, the quantinization will grab the note and put it in a different spot that I end up liking. I like to loop patterns and add only one or two instruments at time to layer together beats. If, like me, you have only a passable sense of rhythm, and limited ability to be creative programming with a step sequencer, the DBI is really helpful in capturing your ideas.

Whereas the TR-08 (purposefully) could really be programmed in one particular way that worked with what the technology allowed in the early 1980's, you can program the DBI either as a step sequencer, with quantized live recording, and even adding a metronome to help with quantized or non-quantized rhythm. My favorite aspect of it has to be the number of different ways you can interact with it and program beats. My initial impressions of the DrumBrute Impact? Man, there's a lot of things I really like about this machine. But I ended up selling a ton of gear, and as much as I wanted to keep the TR-08 for nostalgia/aesthetics, it's just an 808 and a digital modeler of one, at that, so I traded it in as part of buying the DrumBrute Impact, and ended up not spending any new money on it. Back around page 5, I reacted to the SonicState video mostly favorably, but wasn't sure it made sense for me.
